2023 Toyota bZ4X Price, Release Date, ReviewEven though Toyota may appear to be a bit late to the electric car party, it has experimented with EVs in Japan and California since 1997 with the first RAV4 EV and again in 2012 with the second iteration. When Toyota unveiled its new 2023 Toyota bZ4X tiny electric SUV 2023, it made sense that it would be the first all-electric vehicle to be sold in every state.

Only the logos and minor trim levels and equipment differentiate the Toyota from the Subaru Solterra mechanically and cosmetically. The Toyota RAV4 and Subaru BRZ will be built on the same production lines in Japan and China as the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ.

This five-seat crossover SUV has a unique look thanks to a rear spoiler with a ducktail design. The split-roof rear spoiler and low rear diffuser add a dynamic look to the vehicle. This high-end electric vehicle also has a power liftgate with jam protection. Outside mirrors that are heated and have puddle lights make driving in bad weather much more accessible. This all-new model boasts a panoramic sunroof with fixed glass and a power-adjustable sunshade.

Interior Design

At 38.6 inches, the BZ4X has about an inch greater headroom than the RAV4 on the first row. However, back seat occupants lose nearly two inches of head and legroom — 37.1 and 35.3 inches, respectively — to the BZ4X’s more steeply pitched roof. 27.7 cubic feet of behind-seat cargo space (or 25.8 cubic feet with the JBL audio system’s subwoofer) is around 10 cubic feet less than the RAV4’s load capacity. (The folded-flat load volume of the BZ4X is unknown; Toyota has yet to provide this information.)

It includes the same 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia system with “Hey Toyota” hot-word detection as the new Tundra; the BZ4X has small volume buttons instead of a significant volume knob like the pickup. Generally speaking, this is a well-structured and responsive menu. Certain functionalities may be overlooked due to a lack of clarity in the user interface due to its oversimplification.

Wireless connectivity or the single USB Type-A media connector in the center console are standards for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Extra USB Type-C charging ports can be located in the front and back of the vehicle (four in total). The Toyota Remote Connect telematics service, available for a free 3-year trial but requires a subscription afterward, includes Alexa and Google Assistant smart home and digital assistant integration. Other capabilities, such as a digital key and remote charging monitoring, are also available.

All-wheel-drive bZ4Xs have two motors, each delivering 107 horsepower and 124 lb-ft of torque, resulting in 214 horsepower and 248 lb-ft for the front-drive variants. 0-60 mph timings for the front-wheel-drive are listed at 7.1 seconds, while all-wheel drive is listed at 6.5 seconds. These are good times for an electric vehicle, but they don’t tell the whole story. The bZ4X is propelled through traffic like a sci-fi rocket scooter by both cars’ rapid acceleration and high torque output. This electric drivetrain has more of a “mule kick” than the midrange punch of a gasoline-powered vehicle. An internal explosion is something of the past when you experience this kind of acceleration.

A good amount of road noise can be heard coming from the back of the bZ4X when it’s moving. More wind noise was generated by the Limited’s unusual two-piece split spoiler option. Insulating an electric car’s cabin is more challenging because there’s no engine to hide the noise. We accomplished anticipated Toyota to get this wrong, given its experience with the quiet Mirai, an electric car that uses a hydrogen fuel cell to generate power, but it did.

Compared to the Tesla Model Y, the bZ4X has a lower starting price of $43,215 for the front-drive XLE and a higher starting price of $49,995 for the all-wheel-drive Limited. Though the bZ4X lacks a front trunk like the Tesla Model Y, it has a large back seat and a boxy SUV-style cargo area that we find appealing.
